CURBING BULLYING AMONG CHILDREN

CURBING BULLYING AMONG CHILDREN
Bullying has been an issue among Children in schools, religious centers, society and public gathering. What made a child to be cruel to others? What do bullies have to gain from inflicting pain on others? No child is born a bully. There must be some factors responsible for that. Bullying are common among both sexes, and it have serious effects on the children such as fear, some of the children may not want to go to school again because of constant bullying at school, some girls can tend to bully others as a result of their beauty, dressing or intelligence and as a result of this they may affect the children psychologically by losing their self-confidence . The essence of this article is to look into factors responsible for bullying, providing causes and solutions to it so that parents, teachers, guardians, instructors can know how to deal with bully responsibly among the children.
The  united states national institute of health (centre for disease control) defined bullying in 2014 as any unwanted aggressive behaviours by another youth or group of youths who are not siblings or current dating partners that involves an observed or perceived power imbalance and is repeated multiple times or is highly likely to be repeated. Bullying may inflict harm or distress on the targeted youth including physical, psychological, social or educational harm”
Oleveus (1991) defined bullying as repeated negative or malicious behaviour by one or more individuals against a person who cannot defend himself or herself.
From these definitions it can be inferred that bullying is infliction of harm or fear repeatedly by a stronger fellow on a weaker one who cannot defend himself or herself. Bullying can either be direct, indirect, or cyber bullying. Bullying is direct when hitting, threatening, insulting, using verbal abuses on others in a relationship between two or more people. Bullying can be indirect when it does not happen face to face or eye to eye between the bullied and the person being bullied. It involves spreading rumors about others, gossip, hate speech and so on. Cyber bullying are abuses on electronic media, it involves threatening and harassment. Those involved in bullying are often divided into three groups: victims of bullying- those who are bullied without bullying others. Bullies- those who bullied others without being bullied. Bully victim- bullies who are bullied by others
The following are the factors responsible for bullying among children:
Social factors: some children find it very difficult to relate with others, some of them may have slow speech, stammering, disable. This may make them to be ostracized in school and if they abuse them with their deficiency, this can make them to bully their mates. Some also bully as a result of their poor performance in school they feel threatened by the brilliant students who may want to look down on them.
Poor parental upbringing: some children are raised in broken homes, they are usually unhappy, distressed, emotionally disturbed, this can made them to inflict harm on others at any slight provocation. Some children grow up seeing domestic abuse in their homes, father beating mother in the presence of the children. Some of these children may not see anything wrong in inflicting fear or pain on others because they live with pains and fear. Some parents also fail to teach their children that bullying is wrong. Some homes are also prone to violence, siblings at constant war against another inflicting harm and pain on one another
Physical and emotional factor:  some children are not pleased with what is happening in their homes, some may be deprived of basic needs, children who are derprived of love, care and attention at home may turn out to be bullies by deriving pleasure in inflicting pains or discomfort to others.
Bringing children of different age groups together: children are often divided into groups or classes according to their age groups in schools but in rare cases when children who are older in age find themselves in lower classes as a result of poor academic performance or change of school. Such children may turn out to bully other children in the class because of their physical size and strength when they are insulted
Gang mentality:  some children form groups and pride themselves in their strength with motive to torment children who are of lower physical strength and derive pleasure in doing this.
Curbing bullying among children require efforts of parents, teachers and guardians. Parents should teach their children to love one another and to see bullying as something wrong which they should not be involved in. Bullying should be taken seriously by the school by creating warm and loving environment in which children can easily tell their teachers who is bullying them. Schools should also have counseling centers where bullies are counseled to know what factor is responsible for their bullying and taking necessary measures such as visiting the parents, showing love to the child and advising him/her. The school should frown at bullying, there should be norms and behaviours accepted by the school which should be made known to the children and appropriate sanction for any child that defy the rules. Teachers should observe the children during breaks to know if there is any act of bully among the children. religious educators at mosques, churches etc should watch any form of bullying among the children, group children according to their age groups, and  separate children that sit down in cliques and teach children to love one another and not to see themselves as superior to others but equal in the sight of God.  Curbing bullying among children is a collective effort of teachers, parents, religious educators and the society by creating a love and friendly environment. It is difficult for bullying to thrive in a loving and friendly environment.
